A Breakout Session with Dr. Angela Franks

The current Zeitgeist views the body as a task to be performed, not a reality to be received. Surprisingly, John Paul II does not completely disagree, but for him the body is not an either/or: "The Creator has assigned the body to man as a task, the body in its masculinity and femininity, and that in masculinity and femininity he assigned to him in some way his own humanity as a task …" What John Paul II sees--and the contemporary culture rejects--is that the body has a (spousal!) meaning that one must first receive from the Creator in order then to express that meaning creatively in one's own life. This talk will explore how the theology of the body and other works by Karol Wojtyła/John Paul II present the embodied person as a dynamic interplay between objective truth and subjective task. A deeper understanding of this dynamic has evangelical value, because we are called both to teach the truth of the person and also to support individuals in living out this truth creatively, as each person's particular mission demands.
